Academic Vocabulary



Rather than previewing vocabulary words in isolation before reading, the Common Core Standards for College and Career Readiness indicate that students will find meaning of academic vocabulary through "close reading" of text. Here is an example of how that is being practiced at Dryden:

Students jot down what they think the words mean based on clues they find in the text.  

Then, they share their evidence and come to common understandings of what the words mean according to the text. This leads to deeper comprehension of the text as well as the individual vocabulary words as related to the text.
